GTA 6 Ray Tracing

Will GTA 6 Support Ray Tracing and 60FPS?

If you watched the GTA VI trailers and felt like something looked genuinely different about the lighting, you were not imagining it.

That warm, natural glow across Vice City at night. The way shadows fall inside cars. The reflections on the water in that aerial shot. It does not look like any GTA game before it, and there is a specific reason for that.

Digital Foundry confirmed it after breaking down the trailers frame by frame. GTA VI is running Ray Traced Global Illumination on PS5. Real light simulation, not the baked approximations most open world games still rely on.

The bigger question though is what that actually costs you as a player. Because ray tracing and 60fps on PS5 are not friends, and Rockstar is going to have to pick a side. Here is where things stand right now about whether or not GTA 6 will have ray tracing.

⚠️Disclaimer: Rockstar has not officially confirmed graphics modes or frame rate targets for GTA VI. Everything here is based on Digital Foundry’s trailer analysis and developer comments. We update this page as new information arrives.

GTA VI Ray Tracing and 60FPS: Quick Answer

Digital Foundry confirmed it after analysing both trailers. Rockstar explicitly confirmed Trailer 2 was captured entirely on PS5 hardware. Trailer 1 was never officially confirmed as PS5 footage, but Digital Foundry’s own breakdown concluded the visuals were achievable on that hardware.

What they found:

  • Ray Traced Global Illumination (RTGI): the system that controls how light bounces and diffuses through the entire game world
  • Ray traced reflections on water surfaces in the Vice City nighttime aerial shot
  • A hybrid approach combining ray tracing with Screen Space Reflections to keep performance realistic

The lighting you see in the trailers, that warm, natural, almost cinematic glow across Leonida, that is RTGI doing its job. It is not a filter or a post-process trick. It is actual light simulation.

Why 60FPS With Ray Tracing Is Unlikely on PS5?

Why 60FPS With Ray Tracing Is Unlikely on PS5

Ray tracing at 60fps on base PS5 is almost certainly not happening at launch.

Digital Foundry’s own reasoning centers on RTGI being baked directly into the rendering pipeline rather than sitting on top of it as an optional effect, which is what makes it so hard to strip out for a 60fps mode.

On top of that, it’s worth remembering GTA VI’s open world simulation, the NPC density, traffic systems, police ai system, physics, and everything happening in Leonida at once, puts its own pressure on the CPU regardless of what’s happening with ray tracing. Lowering graphical settings does not fix that. The CPU has to do the work regardless.

Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar technical lead who worked on GTA 3 through GTA IV, put it on X:

At 30fps you can render twice as many polygons compared to 60fps. For a competitive action game you would always go for the high frame rate, but for GTA you might prefer the visual details.”

That is not a random opinion. That is someone who built these games telling you exactly how Rockstar is thinking about this.

Rockstar Has Been Quietly Testing GTA 6 Ray Tracing for Years

Here is something most people missed.

The Ray Traced Global Illumination Rockstar added to GTA V Enhanced on PC is not just a legacy upgrade. Digital Foundry flagged it specifically as technology backported from GTA VI’s own engine. Rockstar used GTA V as a live testing ground for the exact systems going into GTA VI.

That means by the time GTA VI launches, Rockstar will have had years of real-world performance data on how this technology behaves across different hardware. That is a significant advantage over studios shipping ray tracing for the first time.

GTA 6 Ray Tracing Performance on PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X, and Series S

  • Base PS5: Ray tracing on in fidelity mode at 30fps. A 60fps performance mode may exist but will likely reduce or disable ray tracing to hit the target.
  • PS5 Pro: The best console version at launch. Enhanced GPU headroom and Sony’s PSSR upscaling make a 40fps ray traced mode realistic, possibly even 60fps with reduced RT effects. Worth tempering that though, Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter has said on record he doesn’t think even the Pro hits 60fps unless Rockstar pulls off something close to magical with the CPU side of things. Nothing confirmed yet.
  • Xbox Series X: Similar to base PS5. Ray tracing in fidelity mode, reduced in any performance option.
  • Xbox Series S: Ray tracing will likely be significantly cut back or absent entirely to maintain performance on the weakest console in the lineup.

Why Ray Tracing Matters in GTA 6 Beyond Better Reflections?

Ray tracing in GTA VI is not just about prettier puddles.

The RTGI system changes how the entire world is lit. Without it, game engines fake light bouncing using baked maps and approximations. It works, but certain scenes look artificial, especially interiors and nighttime streets.

With RTGI, a neon sign outside a Vice City bar casts light the way it would in real life. A car’s headlights bleed into a nearby building. Shadows behave like shadows. For a game built around Florida’s look and atmosphere, that difference is enormous.

The Vice City nighttime aerial shot in the trailers looks the way it does because of this system. That is not a cutscene. Rockstar confirmed it was real-time PS5 gameplay.

FAQ

Is ray tracing confirmed in GTA VI on PS5?

Yes. when you analyse the trailer you will identified both ray traced global illumination and ray traced reflections in the official trailers, which Rockstar confirmed were captured on PS5. Rockstar has not officially detailed the specific graphics modes at launch.

Will GTA VI run at 60fps with ray tracing on PS5?

No, not on base PS5 at launch. Digital Foundry’s analysis and comments from former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij both point to 30fps as the likely target when ray tracing is active.

Will PS5 Pro get better ray tracing than base PS5?

Yes. The Pro’s enhanced GPU and PSSR upscaling give Rockstar more headroom. A 40fps ray traced mode or improved image quality at 30fps are both realistic outcomes for Pro owners.

When will Rockstar officially confirm GTA VI graphics modes?

No date has been given. GTA VI launches in November 2026 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Expect official technical details closer to launch.

Ray tracing in GTA VI on PS5 is real and it is more advanced than anything Rockstar has shipped before. The trade-off is frame rate, and that is an honest compromise for a game this ambitious.

If you are on base PS5, you are getting ray tracing at 30fps. If that bothers you, the PS5 Pro is shaping up to be the definitive console version. And if you can wait, the PC release will almost certainly be where GTA VI looks its absolute best.
