GTA 6 Weather System Explained

GTA 6 Weather System: Rain, Storms and Hurricanes Explained

Every time a new GTA 6 clip drops, somebody’s in the comments swearing they spotted hurricanes, tornadoes, the works, based on one blurry frame. I’m not doing that here.

I went back through both trailers, the Digital Foundry breakdown, Jason Schreier’s reporting, and the patents Rockstar and Take-Two have filed, and only wrote down what’s actually there. Both trailers were captured on a base PS5, the same console sitting under most people’s TVs. Here’s what the evidence actually shows.

⚠️ Disclaimer: Rockstar Games has not officially confirmed GTA 6’s weather features. Everything here is based on trailer analysis, patent filings, and published reporting by Digital Foundry and Jason Schreier. We update this page as new information arrives.

Does GTA 6 Have a Weather System?: Quick Answer

Yes, GTA 6 will have a weather ai system. Trailers confirm wet roads, overcast skies, volumetric clouds, and stormy lighting. Jason Schreier’s reporting says Rockstar had dedicated teams building weather as a standalone physics system, not a visual layer on top of the map.

What hasn’t appeared in any trailer yet: actual rain falling. That’s likely because ray-traced rain on wet surfaces is still being optimised for PS5.

Hurricanes are unconfirmed. A 2023 leak claimed they were scrapped. The Hurricane Roxy sign in trailer two suggests at least one storm hit Leonida before the story starts, but free-roam hurricanes are unlikely.

Why Hasn’t GTA 6 Shown Any Rain Yet

IGN went frame by frame through trailer 1 and caught clouds gathering near the gas station shot in a way that looks exactly like a real Florida storm building, not the exaggerated movie version of it.

So the setup is there. What’s missing, across both trailers, is rain actually falling. Wet streets, yeah. Gray skies, yeah. That chase scene with the guy running from the cops looks properly stormy. But nobody’s caught a single drop mid-fall.

That’s strange when you think about it, because they’ve shown mud, puddles, overcast light, basically every side effect of rain except the rain itself. Trailers get scrubbed clean before release, so if it’s not in there, someone made that call on purpose.

Digital Foundry’s breakdown of trailer 2 gives the best clue for why. GTA 6 runs ray-traced global illumination across the board, meaning light from the sun and sky and every reflective surface gets calculated live instead of faked ahead of time.

That’s why the sunny Leonida shots have that real warmth to them, and why the dark scenes actually go black instead of that gray mush older consoles were stuck with.

There’s a shot people keep bringing up, Jason driving with the window down in the opening section of trailer two, where you can see clouds reflected in the car glass. In his sunglasses too. Even on his watch. You don’t get detail like that without ray tracing actually doing the work.

Follow that thread and it makes sense why rain hasn’t shown up yet. If glass and skin reflect light that precisely, rain means every wet surface in the game needs the same treatment in real time, on a base PS5, without the frame rate falling apart. That’s a real problem to solve on base PS5 hardware.

Digital Foundry backs that up a little, since they noticed the water reflections aren’t fully clean either. There are denoiser artifacts in places, and the wider ocean shots lean more on screen-space reflections than full ray tracing.

So it’s not one clean system running everywhere, which lines up with weather still being actively built rather than finished.

Are The Clouds Actually Next-Gen, or Recycled From Red Dead?

The one shot of a jet cutting through clouds in trailer two shows real volumetric clouds, with depth and light moving through them, and that tech isn’t new on its own since Red Dead had it too. What’s different is the scale. These look bigger and taller, which makes sense given we’re seeing them from inside for the first time instead of just looking up from the ground.

Nobody knows yet how storms will actually form and clear, or what flying into one will feel like. Red Dead’s biggest weather complaint, at least for me, was how instantly storms would appear and vanish.

If Rockstar took that note seriously, Leonida’s skies should feel a lot less like a switch flipping and more like something building.

Will There Be a Hurricane in GTA 6? The Hurricane Roxy Sign, Explained

Will There Be a Hurricane in GTA 6

There’s a sign hanging in the bar scene from trailer two that says Hurricane Roxy, and if you’ve lived anywhere on the Gulf Coast you already know what that is. Bars put those up after a real storm wrecks the place and the town rebuilds anyway. It reads like a memorial to a hurricane that already hit Leonida before the story even starts.

That doesn’t confirm a hurricane event in the game, and I’m not going to pretend it does. But given the setting, and given that the original Vice City already had its own tropical storm sequence years ago, it would be a strange omission if a big storm didn’t show up somewhere in the plot.

One thing worth knowing before you get too excited though. In November 2023, Rockstar Universe, one of the more credible leakers in the GTA space, reported that Rockstar had scrapped extreme weather features including hurricanes and tornadoes, possibly due to tech limitations.

That report is nearly three years old now and things change during development, so take it as context, not a conclusion.

GTA 6’s Weather Is a Real System, Not Just a Visual Layer

This is the part that actually matters more than any single shot in the trailers.

Schreier’s reporting described thousands of people at Rockstar split into separate teams, with some coding weather physics as their own dedicated job. GTA 6 Weather AI is being built as its own system, not a shader sitting on top of the map. That changes what it can actually do.

Add the patents Take-Two and Rockstar have filed, covering things like NPCs reacting to environmental conditions, and you get a system that’s meant to actually change how the world behaves, not just look nice from a distance.

Mud affecting traction. Rain changing NPC routes. Storms hitting visibility during chases. Patents don’t confirm features on their own, but they point in the same direction as everything else here.

What Should You Actually Expect From GTA 6’s Weather?

Putting all of it together, here’s where I’d land. Weather that changes by region instead of the whole map flipping at once. Storms building and clearing slower than Red Dead’s sometimes-instant shifts.

Wind that actually moves trees and knocks people around. Mud and wet roads messing with driving and traction. And somewhere in the story, a real hurricane tied into the plot itself.

What I wouldn’t bet on is tornadoes and hurricanes randomly spawning during free roam every hour like it’s a disaster simulator. That doesn’t match the grounded tone Rockstar’s clearly going for here, and it lines up with the 2023 report that extreme weather was scaled back.

Red Dead Redemption 2 set the standard for weather in an open world, and that ran on a PS4. Rockstar’s newest engine (fans call it RAGE 9, though Rockstar has never confirmed that name) is built to handle a lot more than that. Put it next to a setting that’s basically hurricane country, and it’s hard not to expect something bigger.

We still don’t have confirmed rain past a half-second sprinkle during the airplane loading scene, and no flooding footage at all despite the patents pointing that way. Rockstar hasn’t said a word, which tracks, since they never do.

When trailer three or actual gameplay finally drops, watch the sky first. Watch how NPCs react to whatever’s happening around them. Look past the graphics and check whether the weather is actually touching the world or just sitting behind it like scenery.

FAQs

Will GTA 6 have a dynamic weather system?

Yes, from what the trailers and reporting show. Schreier’s reporting described dedicated Rockstar teams building weather as a standalone physics system, not a visual effect layered on top of the world. Take-Two patents also describe NPCs responding to environmental conditions in real time. Rockstar hasn’t officially confirmed specifics, but everything points toward weather that actually changes how the world behaves.

Does it rain in GTA 6?

No rain has appeared in either trailer, but the evidence for it is everywhere. Wet roads, puddles, and overcast skies all show up across both trailers. Rockstar likely hasn’t shown the feature yet because the team is still refining the water systems needed to update reflections on every wet surface in real time, according to Digital Foundry’s analysis. Expect it to show up closer to the November 2026 launch.

Will GTA 6 have hurricanes?

Rockstar has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of hurricanes and tornadoes. However, a 2023 report from Rockstar Universe claimed the studio removed them due to technical or design limitations. On the other hand, the Hurricane Roxy sign in trailer two and the Florida setting both point toward at least one major storm appearing in the campaign story. Random free-roam hurricane spawns seem unlikely given the tone Rockstar is going for.

What does the Hurricane Roxy sign mean in GTA 6?

It’s a bar sign visible in the trailer two bar scene. On the Gulf Coast, bars hang signs like this to mark a storm the community survived and rebuilt from. In GTA 6, it most likely means a hurricane called Roxy hit Leonida before the story begins, building the world’s history before you even arrive.

I’ll keep this one updated the second Rockstar drops anything new, so bookmark it if you’re the type who checks back.

If you’re trying to figure out what hardware you’ll actually need to run this thing, I’ve got a system requirements breakdown that covers what we know so far. Prefer watching over reading? The YouTube channel has the video versions of all this.

So, real question: do you think Leonida gets hit by an actual hurricane in the story, or is Rockstar saving that for something else entirely? Drop it in the comments below, I read every single one of them.
