The message: “Get a PlayStation 5 today to be ready for when Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026.” Not a banner ad, not a pop-up, a direct email to your PlayStation account, because Sony knows exactly who wishlisted this game and doesn’t have the hardware to run it.

That’s genuinely where things stand. Here’s whether you should upgrade to PS5 for GTA 6, and what you actually need across every other platform too.

What Do You Need to Play GTA 6?: Quick Answer

Can You Play GTA 6 on PS4?

Look, nobody wants to spend money they weren’t planning to spend. But this isn’t a case where you can turn down the settings and squeeze another year out of your old hardware.

GTA 6 will not work on PS4 as it is officially confirmed. Rockstar never built it for that console. There’s no version of this game that runs on PS4 hardware- not now, not after some future patch, not ever.

And the specs make it obvious why. The trailer alone shows weather that changes in real time, hundreds of NPCs with individual schedules, and a version of Vice City that makes GTA V’s map look like a demo level. The PS4 has 8GB of shared RAM and a CPU from 2013. There’s nothing to negotiate here.

The good news is that PS5 prices right now, especially second-hand, are the most reasonable they’ve been since launch. People are selling their base PS5s to upgrade to Pro, which means the used market has good options.

Check Amazon, eBay, Facebook Marketplace. I’m not throwing out a specific price because it changes constantly and I don’t want to set a number that’s wrong by the time you read this.

One thing I will say: don’t wait until October. GTA VI is the most anticipated game in over a decade and Sony is going to market it aggressively leading up to November. PS5 demand is going up, not down, as the launch date gets closer.

Can You Play GTA 6 on Xbox One?

Same story as PS4. GTA VI skips Xbox One completely. Your options are Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, or making the jump to PS5. Here’s how I’d think about each:

• Xbox Series S is the cheapest way in. It’s confirmed for GTA VI, it’s a real current-gen console, and it gets you there without breaking the bank. The tradeoffs are less storage and a slightly lower performance ceiling compared to Series X. But if budget is the deciding factor, Series S plays GTA VI.
• Xbox Series X is the better buy if you can stretch to it. More storage, disc drive, full current-gen power. If you’re planning to use this console for the next five or six years, the extra money up front is worth it.
• PS5 is worth thinking about if you’re open to switching. Sony has a marketing deal with Rockstar for GTA VI. Historically those deals mean PlayStation gets exclusive cosmetics, early content access, or timed DLC. Nothing specific has been confirmed yet, but it’s something to factor in if you’re genuinely on the fence.

Do You Need a PS5 Pro for GTA 6?

Last year I would have said the Pro wasn’t worth the extra money for GTA VI without much hesitation. I don’t think that’s quite right anymore.

Here’s what we actually know: Digital Foundry broke down the second GTA VI trailer and concluded it was running on a base PS5 at roughly 1440p, upscaled to 4K, at 30 FPS, footage Rockstar itself confirmed was captured entirely in-game.

What changed in 2026 is Sony’s upscaling situation. Mark Cerny, the PS5’s lead architect, has discussed a significant new upscaling algorithm coming to PS5 Pro, expected around May 2026, developed through Sony’s AMD partnership as a successor to PSSR. Reports have specifically tied the timing to GTA VI’s launch window.

If this update ships before or around November 19 and Rockstar supports it, PS5 Pro could offer meaningfully better image quality or a higher frame rate mode. That is not confirmed. Rockstar hasn’t said anything about it. But it’s a real possibility, not just wishful thinking.

So where does that leave you? If you don’t own a PS5 yet and you have room in your budget for the Pro, 2026 is actually a decent time to go that route. But if the Pro price is a stretch, the base PS5 gives you the full GTA VI experience Rockstar designed the game for. Don’t go into debt chasing a frame rate mode that hasn’t been officially announced.

Will GTA 6 Run at 60 FPS on PS5?

Nobody knows. Rockstar has said nothing. The best evidence we have is the Digital Foundry trailer breakdown suggesting 30 FPS on base PS5.

Rockstar’s track record backs this up, Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at 30 FPS on consoles and GTA VI is a significantly more demanding game. My expectation is 30 FPS on base PS5 and Xbox Series X at launch, with PS5 Pro potentially getting a performance mode depending on Sony’s update.

But that’s me reading the tea leaves, not Rockstar telling us anything. I’ll update this article the moment we get an official word.

GTA 6 PC Requirements and PC Release Date

Most PC upgrade articles will tell you to check your specs against the rumored minimum requirements. I’m going to tell you the only question that actually matters first:

Can you genuinely wait 18 months to two years?

Rockstar hasn’t announced a PC release date for GTA VI. Based on GTA V’s console launch in September 2013 and PC release in April 2015, a gap of around 18 months is the historical pattern. That puts a PC version somewhere in 2027 or 2028. That timeline is not confirmed. It’s pattern recognition.

If you can wait, wait. The PC version of GTA VI will be the best version. Higher frame rates, better settings, mod support eventually, ultra-wide support. If your PC can run it when it comes out, you’re going to have an experience that console players don’t get.

If you cannot wait and launch day matters to you, buy a PS5. There is no other way to play GTA VI on November 19, 2026.

On PC specs: community estimates floating around point to roughly a Ryzen 7 3700X and a GTX 1080 Ti as minimum targets, with 150GB SSD storage. These numbers are not from Rockstar, they’re third-party guesses. Use them as a planning reference only.

The one part of those estimates I actually disagree with is the 8GB RAM minimum some lists include. We’re in 2026. 16GB is what modern AAA games need to run properly. Even if an official minimum spec eventually says 8GB, your experience on 8GB won’t be good. Budget for 16GB.

Should You Wait for PS6 Instead of Buying a PS5?

Sony has confirmed there is no PS6 release date. It is not imminent.

Realistically, PS6 is looking at 2028 at the earliest, possibly 2029. Waiting for PS6 to play GTA VI means sitting out two to three years of one of the most talked-about game launches in history.

The online world will be established, the community will have inside jokes you don’t understand, and the early launch energy, which for GTA VI Online is genuinely special, will be long gone.

GTA V launched in 2013. People were still playing it in 2026. GTA VI is going to have that same kind of lifespan. A PS5 bought today will have plenty of life left in it for GTA VI.
