Why GTA 6 Boats Are Different From GTA 5?
GTA 5 had boats. Almost nobody used them.
The water felt empty. Handling was floaty. There was no map reason to be on the ocean when roads were faster and more reliable. Boats existed because they had to, not because Rockstar built the world around them.
GTA 6 is a different situation. Look at the map:
The Grassrivers swamp has shallow mudflats and narrow channels a car cannot cross. The Leonida Keys are islands, which means water is the only fast route between them. Vice City has a canal network running through the city itself, which makes water routes actual shortcuts rather than detours.
The trailers show active boat traffic, wave physics that respond to hulls, and water that behaves like water. If the final game matches what Rockstar has shown, getting on a boat in GTA 6 will be a real decision, not a punishment.

GTA 6 Speedboat: Speedophile Seashark
The Seashark is back. GTA 5 Online players know this one well. It is a personal watercraft, the kind you stand or sit astride, and one of the fastest ways to cover open water in a straight line.
A second-generation version appears in GTA 6 footage. The water physics in the same shots show wakes that actually interact with the surrounding environment, which matters if you are threading through Vice City’s canals where the water bounces between tight concrete walls.
Fast, low-profile, easy to grab. The Seashark has always been the boat that writes its own missions.

GTA 6 Offshore Speedboat: Shitzu Squalo
The Squalo has been in GTA games for years and it makes complete sense in GTA 6. This high-speed offshore boat covers long distances quickly with nothing in its way.
In a game where coastal smuggling runs are a core story thread, this is the boat for open water at full throttle. Expect it in civilian traffic around Vice City harbor and along the Leonida coastline.

GTA 6 Military Boat: Nagasaki Dinghy
A rigid inflatable boat. Compact, military-looking, and more useful than it appears.
GTA 5 players used Dinghies constantly for heist setups because they do something no other boat does as well. They fit through tight passages, handle shallow water close to shore, and they do not attract the attention a luxury speedboat would. Pull up to a dock in a Squalo and everyone looks. A Dinghy just looks like another utility boat doing utility boat things.
That logic works even harder in GTA 6 given how much the Keys and the Grassrivers coast depend on shallow water navigation.

GTA 6 Airboat: New Swamp Vehicle for Grassrivers
This is the most important new watercraft in GTA 6, and probably the one that changes how you play the Grassrivers region most.
An airboat is a flat-bottomed vessel powered by a large propeller fan mounted at the rear. No underwater propeller. No conventional hull digging into the water. It glides across the surface on momentum pushed by the fan.
Real airboats cut through the Florida Everglades across mudbanks, reed beds, and shallow water that stops any traditional hull dead.
Rockstar built Grassrivers around the Florida Everglades. They needed an airboat.
Rockstar showed one in the 2022 development leak and again in the first official trailer, where it operates in the swamp. Rockstar has not confirmed its in-game name yet. The name most commonly circulated by the community is the Airgator Airboat 09, based on in-game branding visible in official screenshots, but that is a community read of the branding rather than something Rockstar has stated outright.
What comes through in the footage is how different the movement feels. No engine pulling through water. Just fan thrust skimming over terrain that nothing else can reach. Some parts of Grassrivers look like they were designed specifically so that this vehicle is the only way in.

GTA 6 Luxury Boat: Dinka Marquis
The luxury end of the roster. A proper yacht, and the kind of vessel that makes Vice City’s harbor feel like a place the wealthy actually use rather than just a painted backdrop.
The Marquis appeared in GTA 5. In GTA 6 it fits far better. Vice City is a city built on wealth, crime, and the gap between the two. Yachts are where deals happen out of earshot. Whether the Marquis plays a story role or exists as a world vehicle, it belongs in this setting.

GTA 6 Mid-Range Speedboat: Pegassi Speeder
A mid-range speedboat that sits between the raw speed of the Squalo and the utility of the Dinghy. It handles well across different water conditions and has shown up across multiple GTA games.
The Pegassi branding puts it in the same family as some of the series’ best sports vehicles. Expect it as one of the more common boats in civilian waterway traffic.

GTA 6 Leisure Boat: Shitzu Tropic
A day cruiser. The Tropic has been in GTA games before and it returns as exactly what it has always been. Not a getaway vehicle. Not a race boat. The kind of craft parked outside a beach house or tied up at a marina on a Tuesday afternoon.
It fits the Vice City aesthetic so well it basically functions as world-building. A harbor full of Tropics looks lived-in.

GTA 6 Kayak: First Non-Motorized Boat in the Series
Yes, a kayak. Human-powered, completely silent, and confirmed as the Crest Kayak through Rockstar’s own Ultimate Edition content reveal, where it’s included as one of Jason’s Safehouse Vehicles alongside a Dinka Enduro motorcycle. This is new for the series.
The case for it makes sense once you look at the map. Grassrivers has narrow waterways where a motorized craft is too wide or too loud. A kayak fits through passages nothing else reaches and produces zero engine noise, which has obvious implications for stealth approaches and NPC detection.
The serious applications are real. The absurd applications, kayaking away from a five-star wanted level in complete silence, are going to produce some of the best GTA 6 content the community puts out in the first month.

GTA 6 Police Boat: Water Pursuit Is Now Real
A police patrol boat appears in GTA 6 trailer footage. This is worth paying attention to if you have relied on water escapes in previous GTA games.
In GTA 5, getting into the ocean was one of the cleaner escape routes available. Police pursuit was land-based. Once you were on the water, you bought yourself time. That looks like it will not work the same way in GTA 6. A dedicated police watercraft in the trailer means law enforcement has actual water presence, which changes the math on canal and coastal escapes completely.
The in-game name has not been confirmed. GTA 5 used the Predator for police watercraft. Whether this is a successor or something new is not known yet.

GTA 6 Large Yachts: Multiple Unnamed Vessels Spotted
Several large yachts appear in trailer footage and the 2022 leak. Big vessels, 80 to 90 foot range visually, consistent with high-end real-world luxury boats. None have confirmed in-game names yet.
These appear in both ambient world shots and in scenes that suggest possible story use. Whether they are fully driveable or function as mission locations is not confirmed. Either way, their presence makes Vice City harbor look like a real working port rather than a flat texture of water with boats painted on it.

GTA 6 Dive Boat: Jason Is Seen Inside One
A dedicated diving support vessel shows up in the first official trailer and clearly in the 2022 development leak. In the leak footage, Jason is visible inside the boat. The deck has oxygen tanks, rope storage, life rings, and proper equipment layout consistent with an actual working dive boat, not just a generic boat with a scuba aesthetic.
GTA 6 appears to include underwater environments and diving gameplay based on what the trailers show. A vessel built to support that gameplay fits. It was spotted operating in the Leonida Keys area in Trailer 1.

Other Boats Spotted in GTA 6 World Footage
A few more vessels appear in background and ambient trailer shots without enough detail to confirm whether they are player-accessible:
Shrimp Boat: Fits the Florida coastal setting and the fishing activity visible throughout the trailers. Consistent with how Rockstar populated the world in Red Dead Redemption 2, where the environment felt like it had a reason to exist.
Offshore Supply Boat: Visible in the industrial harbor areas spotted in Vice City waterfront footage.
Sailing Yacht: Appears at distance in open ocean shots.
Cruise Ship: Visible in at least one trailer sequence. Almost certainly a world prop or mission location at that scale, but its presence tells you the ocean sections of the map have real depth to them.
How Water Travel Works in GTA 6?
The physics foundation is what separates GTA 6 water from GTA 5 water.
In GTA 5, water was a flat surface with a texture. Boats sat on top of it. Wakes were cosmetic. Nothing interacted with anything else in a way that felt physical.
The trailers show something different. Hulls create wakes that interact with shorelines and other objects. A flat-bottomed airboat crossing shallow marsh behaves differently from a rigid speedboat hull in deep water. Water in narrow canals responds differently to the same vessel than open ocean does.
These are not visual upgrades. They change how water travel works as a system rather than as a texture you happen to be riding across.
The map geography does the rest. Open Gulf for long offshore runs. Vice City canals for urban shortcuts. The Leonida Keys for island passage. Grassrivers for swamp navigation that requires a completely different class of vehicle.
Water in GTA 6 is a road. The boat roster is built around that.

At least 11 to 12 distinct watercraft have been spotted across official trailer footage and the 2022 development leak. Rockstar has not announced the full launch roster. Given how much of the Leonida map is built around water travel, the final number at launch is likely higher than what has been spotted so far.
